Linear models arise from many different fields including business, manufacturing as well as the sciences. This chapter shows many applied problems and how they can be created mathematically into a category called linear optimization problems. For problems of only two variables it relatively straightforward to graph the constraints and make a geometric argument about where the optimal value is.
